Getting Employment as a Web Site Designer in Brisbane Australia

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

So you want to work in a web development company in Brisbane? This article gives you useful hints and advice for all would-be web designers in Australia’s most livable city.

The web development job market is very crowded in Australia, as it is in most countries. Not only do you have fully qualified people looking for jobs, but you also have self taught enthusiasts and those who think being able to edit a MySpace page means they can be called web designers. Fortunately there is also a high demand for web design so new job opportunities are being created all the time.

One of the big choices that you have to make when looking for a job in web design is do you want to work in a small or large firm. In Brisbane we have a good mixture of these two types, so there is plenty of choice.

Let’s look at the relative advantages and disadvantages of working for small or large firm.

Small Firms

Small firms offer the advantage of a high level of variety in work. One day you may be making simple edits to a web site the next you might be designing a site from scratch. Another advantage that you might find is that you are able to effect the strategy and direction of the design firm. If it’s a small team your views will be heard and your decisions will make a difference. Of course this can lead to higher levels of responsibility and therefore stress, but at least you’ll feel in control of your own destiny. You will have to be prepared to use a wide range of skills in a small firm, if you only know Dreamweaver then a small firm is probably not the place for you, but if you are happy to jump into Photoshop, think nothing of setting up an FTP connection and know your way around the most popular content management systems, you might feel right at home.

Disadvantages of working for a small firm include the amount of relatively menial tasks that may have to be performed. For example you might be hoping to test your design skills to the full and feel disappointed to be doing text updates or admin tasks. The lack of a structure at work may also be frustrating; an ‘all hands on deck’ approach is often used in small firms.

From a monetary point of view working in a small firm can be good and bad. Many small firms are cash poor and can’t match the salaries of the big firms, but they can experience far higher growth. Your input could result in a small firm’s output increasing substantial and potentially upping your salary. My advice would be to negotiate some kind of profit sharing or commission incentive; it’ll help you get more dollars in your pocket and keep you focused and on your toes.

Large Firms

It can often appear quite glamorous; flash offices, big clients, impressive colleagues. And it is true that you will probably be exposed to the higher end of the market, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be wining and dining clients and working on the glitziest projects all the time. Starting out in a large web design company often means starting low and working your way up, so be prepared to do the hard yards. The ability for you to make decisions and to affect the company’s direction will almost certainly be limited compared to working in a small firm.

The large firms can often afford to pay web designers very well and in the right place your skills and talents should be noticed and rewarded, but perhaps not as quickly as in a small firm. Larger firms can also allow for a greater degree of specialisation, you may have responsibility for just one particular element of web design. Whether this is seen as an advantage or not will be an indicator as to your suitability for life with the big boys.

Brisbane’s Choice

In Brisbane we have a wide range of web design companies that can be seen as potential employers. The larger firms tend to be in the city and you will have to make appointments either with the human resources department or via a recruitment agency. Sending a resume in will not do any harm especially if you include examples of your work.

I would recommend avoiding the very smallest of firms as these are often home office type setups and may not be run very professionally. The next step up are the small firms with offices or shops, of these I would chose the most visibly and active, after all you don’t want to work in dingy back office with no new clients.

Look in the areas of Brisbane known for creative industries; these include Woolloongabba, West End and the Valley. Have a walk around and get a feel for the how the firms look and how busy they seem. Don’t be afraid to pop in and have chat.

BA Creative is a small Brisbane web development firm with a lovely shop in Woolloongabba. Pop in to talk about great web design. Peter Accini is the Creative Director of BA Creative a boutique design firm (web, print, signage, anything) with offices in Brisbane and Melbourne. Give up your Old Computer System

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Anyone who has purchased a computer system has learned how quickly they lose their value, and become obsolete. This rapid devaluation often leads to the dilemma: what to do with an older system, when you’re no longer going to use it? Selling it is most often a waste of time and effort. A computer bought for $3,000.00 on January 1, 2005 and then put up for sale on December 31, 2008 will rarely bring offers of more than $200.00 to $350.00, and even these don’t come often. Older systems are proportionately less valuable.

One quick, easy solution is to donate the computer system to a charity, and write off what is appropriate. However, charities are quickly becoming more and more skeptical about accepting older computer systems, and less and less likely to surrender receipts (for use with a tax return) for very much money.

Sometimes it is a wise course of action to simply cannibalize the older system for components that will work in other systems. Some components can be switched between older and newer computer systems. These can include power supplies, hard drives, RAM, graphics cards, speakers, keyboards, CD and DVD readers writers and so forth. If you have a use or need for your old DVD burner in your newer system, you’re almost always best off going the cannibal route. But there are some other options, some of which can be quite attractive. Sometimes, the otherwise out of work computer system can be set to tending some necessary and or useful affairs and matters.

Hand in hand with cannibalizing is stripping out components and selling them individually. This can be especially beneficial if you recently installed a hardware upgrade to the now defunct system such as a good DVD or CD reader writer, or a new hard drive. Not only are the components often easier to sell, they will bring more money and ship much, much easier and cheaper.

DEDICATED FAX SYSTEM

You can turn almost any old system into a dedicated fax receiver at either your home or office. It can be incredibly convenient to have a fax at the house! Anyone who has bought a house or car lately will attest to how nice a fax at the house would be. Remember, the system does not have to be set to always receive faxes. You can turn it on or off as you deem necessary based on your use and needs. All your system requires for this application is a phone line, a modem, and Windows. The fax service in Windows must be turned on and configured in order for this to work properly. This is very easily accomplished through the Control Panel of Windows.

HOME ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM

Recently, manufacturers of computer systems and components have entered the home entertainment business with a vengeance. No longer are computers just good for games and music, now you can hook them up to control your TV, cable signals, speaker systems, VCR, DVD player, etc. You can even record to and play from them. The system would need some hardware and software, but not too much, and all of the necessities can be had at reasonable (and quickly dropping) prices. You can learn more about the rapidly growing home entertainment computer systems industry on any number of sites on the Internet. A good place to start is microsoft com .

As you can see, you don’t have to throw up your hands and scream when you’re offered 5% of what you paid for your computer system a year earlier. There are some other options, some of which can be quite satisfying and rewarding.

The Journey of Learning Meditation

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Learning to meditate is an adventure of self-discovery, enlightenment and personal fulfillment. Of course, not everyone follows the path of insight meditation, subscribing to the whole spiritualism behind the practice. Some people use meditation and relaxation simply to get a handle on their strong emotions and daily stresses. Some people take classes as a time for quiet reflection. Whatever your reason for getting started, you will notice a different feeling stirring in you.

Meditation study emphasizes position when students are learning how to meditate because, they stress, sitting upright allows energy to flow straight down the spine and back up again. Participants are able to take deeper breaths and remain mentally alert, even as the body moves into a deeper state of relaxation. There are two cushions the meditation group may use: the zafu and the zabuton. The zafu is a thick, pillbox-shaped cushion that is usually round. A zabuton is flatter, more like a dinner table seat cushion. There are also gomdens (taller square cushions), kneeling benches and yoga mats used in meditative practices. Visit www.samadhicushions.com for some ideas on meditation accessories you may purchase to get the full experience.

One obstacle many people face when learning to meditate is drowsiness. Many new meditators feel they will be most comfortable lying in a darkened room. However, once heart rate and circulation decreases while meditating, sleep chemicals like melatonin and dopamine will also be released. The end result will be a state of sleep-hypnosis and not true meditation. Meditation instruction trains your body to be as if sleeping but your mind to be fully aware. Your teacher will probably instruct you to sit on a floor cushion with your legs crossed and your eyes open, cast slightly downward.

Next the question becomes, “What do I do while sitting?” This is perhaps the most challenging part of learning to meditate. Naturally, our mind wants to wander, so it can be difficult to reach a meditative state. The most basic approach is to opt for “choice-less awareness,” as meditation teacher J. Krishnamurti calls it. You can become conscious, without thinking trivial thoughts, by focusing on sensory awareness — on your breathing rhythm, on a fixed object before you or on the feeling of energy within you. Let your thoughts come and go until finally, there are no more thoughts. Focus on the area below and behind your belly button — the hara point — and let the energy radiate from your center up toward your forehead. Soon you will understand how meditation works.
