The College of the United States

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

The College of the United States (one of the future colleges in Chicago) will strive to create global leaders of tomorrow capable of fulfilling the vision of our Founding Fathers by becoming successful men and women of principle and action, effective in spreading the benefits of reason and individualism, and the bounty of liberty worldwide through their work and their example.

We believe many students are aware that current influential ideologies do not reflect their values. Epistemological and ethical relativism, big-government mandated economics, entitlement politics and hostility to American values reign in Academia and ‘higher’ culture. These students are looking for alternatives to the typical colleges and universities in Chicago and the College of the United States will make that possible.

In addition to covering all traditional subjects, our curriculum is specifically designed to teach thinking skills, and how to powerfully integrate ideas and information by using the principles of philosophy.

Our graduates will be prepared to excel in their fields of choice due to their training in the comprehensive, integrative power of philosophy, highly developed creative thinking skills, broad knowledge in the humanities and sciences, and extensive real-world experience.

Rarely do schools specifically train and nurture students in thinking skills per se. This is the goal of the College of the United States.

Training for life (and work) is only possible by experiencing an education that enables the individual to continue educating himself. Adaptability is mankind’s greatest survival tool made possible by the reasoning and imaginative mind; preparing the student for all life’s variety and challenge is the sine qua non of education. Auto and Car Insurance - Getting the Best Price

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

One of the less enjoyable things in life is the need to carry insurance, especially since purchasing it involves a lot of research and shopping around.  Here are some tips on what to look for when purchasing auto and car insurance.

Everyone has to have it, but few really understand it.  Auto and car insurance often seem like a hassle rather than a protection, but regardless of your attitude toward it, it is a “necessary evil”.  It is important to understand how insurance works, as well as the requirements per law, so that you are ready when it comes time to use your insurance.

The premium you pay for auto and car insurance is based on the amount of coverage you want and the risk factor taken up by the insurance provider based on your age, your vehicle, and your driving record.  There are a few other factors, but these are all minor and related to these major components.  In essence, if you have a history of citations, accidents, or theft, your premium will be higher because you will be seen as a higher risk for coverage.  The same is true of young, inexperienced drivers, as well as autos that are older and more likely to break down.

The way that auto and car insurance functions is through the use of collective funds.  You and other policy holders pay premiums that are lumped into one sum to be used by the insurance provider to cover incidents for all parties.  For example, if you have only paid in $600 worth of premiums but total your car and need to make use of the full $40,000 on your policy, the insurance agency must pull the money from somewhere.  The premiums raised from all policies are used to cover such issues, gambling on the probability that there will not be a flood of claims at the same time (much like the way banks use money to provide loans).

Premiums are set for auto and car insurance also based on the area in which you live (based on averages and additional risks due to statistics from your area) it’s called Auto Insurance Commerce.  For example, in high traffic areas such as Los Angeles and Houston, you are likely to pay more for your insurance than in Amarillo, Texas, which has a much smaller population and fewer cars on the road, providing less chance of an accident.

There are ways to save on the cost of your auto and car insurance and you may get the auto insurance lowest price available just look around  the Internet.  You can increase your deductibles, decrease your coverage to the minimum state requirements, dismiss optional coverage, and take advantage of good driver discounts.  Many companies will offer discounts for keeping a clean driving record for a certain amount of time and may increase discounts for alarm system installation and driver safety courses.  For young drivers, discounts are often given for good grades (maintaining an A or B average).

Hardwood Furniture in Regency England

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

An important document in the history of 19th century English furniture was a book of designs by George Smith, who held the appointment of “Upholder extraordinary to HRH the Prince of Wales” (the future King George IV). Smith had a business premise at Princess Street, Cavendish Square, London, and his book of 158 designs was published in 1808 by William Taylor of Holborn. The hardwood furniture designs include cornices, tables, bedsteads, chairs, tall bookcases, commodes, window drapery, and other items, the names of which, adapted from the French, possibly appear in the English language for the first time - escritoire, jardiniere, dejune tables, chiffoniers. The designs show the taste of the Regency fashion prevalent in England at that time. Smith, in his “Preliminary Remarks”, gives an interesting insight into the prevailing taste of the period:

“The following practical observations on the various woods employed in cabinet work may be useful. Mahogany, when used in houses of consequence, should be confined to the parlour and the bedchamber floors. In furniture for these apartments the less inlay of other woods, the more chaste will be the style of work. If the wood be of a fine, compact, and bright quality, the ornaments may be carved clean in the mahogany. Where it may be requisite to make out panelling by an inlay of lines, let those lines be of brass or ebony. In drawing-rooms, boudoirs, ante-rooms, East and West India satin woods, rosewood, tulip wood, and the other varieties of woods brought from the East, may be used; with satin and light coloured woods the decorations may be of ebony or rosewood; with rosewood let the decorations be ormolu, and the inlay of brass. Bronze metal, though sometimes used with satin wood, has a cold and poor effect: it suits better on gilt work, and will answer well enough on mahogany.”

Amongst the designs, some display a subdued Gothic character - these are usually carved in light oak, or painted in a light stone color, some of them having heraldic shields, with coats of arms and crests highlighted in color. There are also some window seats painted to look like marble, with Roman or Greco-Roman ornaments painted in green to look like bronze. Some of the finest are mahogany with bronze green ornamentation.

Nowadays, of course, Regency style hard wood furniture may not be affordable or appropriate. For contemporary decor, many people choose oak coffee table or mabye furniture for their homes.

Walking by the swimming pool in the park

Friday, April 24th, 2009

One of my son’s favorite pasttimes is to walk to the park “where the big swimming pool is” and watch kids swimming in there. He’s still a bit skittish about jumping in and swimming on his own, but he loves to watch. He sits by the pool fence that wraps around the property and just watches. Once in a while he’ll turn and tell me something that he saw another kid doing, either to tell me it was right or wrong. He notices a lot.

It’s definitely one of those wonderous moments that mothers get to enjoy. If you slow down your brain and just sit and watch and look at him in the moment it really is amazing to see this little creature opening up to see the world. Parenting is incredible.

He wants to know everything. When we’re out on walks he’ll point to things and ask me what they are and then ask a ton of questions about them. What are those mommy? Those are outdoor solar lights. They help to light the garden at night so you can see the pretty flowers and it helps people to see where they’re walking. That will either satisfy him or start another round of questions.

If he sees something that looks like a ride or something neat to go into, he’ll run over and hop right in. Even something like a metal gazebo. To him it’s a wonderous castle that sticks out in the middle of the yard. A fort, an escape to avoid the pirates (or to be one) depending on what he’s doing.

Childhood is amazing, I love how to turns the most mundane things into a fantasy playground and sees the world in a whole new way. It makes me stop and think and enjoy things more.

Is Emailing The Best Use of Your Resources For Multi-Level Marketing?

Friday, April 24th, 2009

With email filters, blockers, and hundreds of spam emails you receive each day, is email marketing still a good use of your time and money to grow and build your affiliate business? The answer to this question, in my opinion is “Yes, but.”

I can recall a few years back putting approximately 600 MLM Autoresponder Leads into my MLM autoresponder and enrolling a minimum of 6 new distributors a month into my home-based business. These days, if you had 1,000 times that many email leads, you may get a smattering of prospects, and maybe, maybe, one new downline member. You can’t play be the old rules, but that doesn’t mean that email marketing is dead.

What is the biggest difference between now and then? Numbers. With the incredible growth of the web and spam, it simply requires greater numbers to make your return on investment worthwhile. With the millions and millions of emails circulating on a daily basis, you need massive numbers to get results.

In summary, is sending out thousands of emails still effective for growing your network marketing business? Yes. You have to think about throwing more numbers of mlm email leads you are bulk emailing. Email Marketing is a worthwhile means for MLM company.

Hawaii is one of the most preferred destination wedding choices. The islands offer magnificent scenery and beach weddings are incredibly popular and romantic, whether you choose a Kauai wedding, a Maui wedding, a Big Island wedding or any of the other islands. Weddings in Hawaii have something for everyone, and are often surprisingly affordable.

If you are planning a wedding in Hawaii be prepared for some extra planning. Making travel and hotel arrangements, obtaining a marriage license and finding a wedding officiant in a place that is not your home can prove to be a daunting experience. It would be a smart idea to research Hawaii wedding planners as one of the first steps in the planning of your event.

Such services send pictures of potential wedding locations, provide a wide range of services you can pick and choose from, and otherwise do most of the work for you. They will arrange for transportation for you and your wedding guests, the location for your Hawaii wedding, flowers, leis, photos, videos, and almost every other service that you can imagine.

Some wedding services offer attractively priced Hawaii wedding packages, but do some comparison shopping to find the best deal. The same is true for florist and photography services, which you may want to compare.

There are so many wonderful choices when deciding upon which one of the islands to have your wedding. Being married next to the lava fields of an active volcano, a sunset beach wedding or a ceremony at the bottom of a waterfall are just a few of the many choices.

Canon Digital Rebel XTi Review

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

The Digital Rebel XTi, the newer version of the Digital Rebel XT, resembles its predecessor in many ways. It offers a 10.1-megapixel sensor, bigger eye-friendly LCD screen, and many new features. Small body molding changes in the XTi arguably makes a difference in the ergonomics of the camera; depending on your hand size, you may find the XTi comfortable or unbalanced and cramped.

Two of the most salient changes from the XT are readily apparent on the back of the unit: the LCD screen is a larger 2.5 inches, and the dedicated status LCD is missing; instead the XTi uses the main LCD as the status display. The camera automatically activates or deactivates the LCD screen as your eye moves to or away from the viewfinder. In addition, the newer version shows flash exposure lock and white balancing in its viewfinder’s status bar.

The critical shooting functions are easily accessible through the four-way buttons and LCD screen on the back of the camera. Program shift, exposure compensation, exposure lock, drive mode, and focus-point selection all have dedicated buttons.

The menus are simpler and easier to navigate than with the XT. Additionally, the Picture Styles feature has been added, offering predefined image parameter sets for shooting in specific situations. For example, the Portrait style provides settings appropriate for reproducing skin tones.

Several features from the previous two versions of the Digital Rebel have been added or enhanced. The Auto Rotate During Playback mode allows users to magnify and pan around the image that appears immediately after shooting. Users can view the histogram display in luminance (brightness), RGB or monochrome. And users have new long-exposure noise-reduction options.

The XTi has a 10.1-megapixel sensor, upgraded from the XT’s 8-megapixel.

The Xti features a triple self-cleaning sensor system. First, the sensor has an antistatic, dust-repelling coating. Second, a clear element in front of the sensor vibrates ultrasonically when the camera is turned on or off, to shake off dust. Third, users can create “dust referencea” shot that permits the digital removal of dust spots during later editing.

Users have versatile lens options, as this camera will accept all Canon EF and EF-S line lenses, which include everything from ultra-wide-angle to super-telephoto functions. The unit is also compatible with EX-Series Speedlite flashes.

This camera tends to retail in the $500 to $800 range.

Features and Specifications include….

Camera Type: SLR/professional
Image Sensor: CMOS

Lenses: Interchangeable
Power Type: NB-2LH
Power Duration: 360 Images
Memory Type: CompactFlash Card, Types I and II
LCD Screen Resolution: 230,000 pixels
Viewfinder: Optical (Through the lens)

Users generally give this camera good reviews. Users who are transitioning from point-and-shoot cameras give the XTi especially good reviews, citing the great picture quality and ease of use. Some users lament the lack of an inborn anti-shake feature, and although lenses are available with this feature, they are high-priced. Prospective purchasers, especially those transitioning from point-and-shoot cameras, should be aware that fully realizing the potential of this and similar cameras does require purchasing multiple lenses, the selection of which is not especially easy or cheap. That having been said, there is little buyer-remorse for those who do wish to invest in this camera and the lenses suitable to their photographic goals.
