What Weight Should I Be?

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

What should I weigh? This is a question that we should always ask ourselves before we begin a weight loss program. If you go by how you feel, you run the risk of being influenced by distorted perceptions of weight that may be heavily influenced by your culture. This is why some skinny people think they’re fat and some fat people think they’re just about right.

It may help to rephrase your question to “What is the healthiest weight for me?”

One of the quickest ways to get a general weight range answer to that question would be to check out some medical weight charts. Community health centers usually have these. The three factors that go into finding your ideal weight on these charts are your age, height, and build. The first two are, of course objective, the third is somewhat subjective. Basically, your build is how wide your bones are spread. Basically, someone with broad shoulders, chest bones, and hip bones will have a higher ideal weight than someone of the same age and height with a slimmer bone structure.

A primary difficulty with losing weight to be healthy is that weight fluctuations are themselves unhealthy. But lowering your weight and then keeping it steady is about the best thing you can do for your health. So dieting and then returning to what got you overweight in the first place is a very unhealthy way to go about weight management.

Weight charts can be helpful, but you would be better served to see your doctor about finding an ideal weight. This helps remove some of the self-deceiving subjectiveness from the equation. Your doctor may have some suggestions that surprise you.

Some doctors use weight charts and some use Body Mass Index (BMI) to come up with a target weight. But in most cases, they will also take into consideration other conditions you may have, your muscle mass, and your family history.

Muscle mass, for example, is very dense. So if you are a muscular person, you can be much heavier than the charts and BMI indicate for you, yet still be very lean. One trick your doctor may prefer for getting you to a healthy weight would be to put you on a resistance training program to gain muscle, which is an easier way for some people to become lean than losing weight.

So really the determination of your healthy weight starts with consulting a chart or a BMI calculation, then taking into consideration your bone structure and muscle structure.

The bottom line is that weight per se isn’t that important for your health or for appearing lean. A densely packed body made up more of muscles and bones than fats is the key. So instead of aiming at an ideal weight, you would be best served to aim for an ideal body fat level. If you are a member of a gym, the gym probably has equipment for taking these measurements, otherwise your doctor can help. Sports stores and some pharmacies may also carry skin-fold calipers for making general body fat calculations.

So perhaps the question isn’t “What should I weigh?” or “What is the healthiest weight for me?”, rather “What is my ideal body composition?” While the “average” person can get a good estimation using weight charts, a large portion of the population has above or below average characteristics in terms of muscle mass and bone mass. If you do not fall into the “average” category, you may need to consult with your doctor to set up a healthy body composition plan.

Organic Products Are On The Rise

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

Organic health food stores have been around for a long time, but the number of organic products has greatly increased in recent years. Organic food products have been around for well over a decade. Slowly but surely, people have been finding out that artificial fertilizers, pesticides, and other additives can have seriously compromising health effects. Nonetheless, other kinds of consumer awareness have been a little bit slow to come. Nowadays, there are organic beauty products, organic health care products, and even organic clothing. It is unfortunate that our world is run in such a way that we have to specify when we don’t want to have harmful additives in the things that we use every day. Nonetheless, it is fortunate that people are finally starting to wise up to it. Through organic products, we can all have healthier lives.

No matter what you are using, you can probably find an organic product version of it. There is even organic soda nowadays! Nevertheless, just because something is an organic product does not mean it is healthy. Different states have different rules on what constitute organic products.

In some of them, such as California, there are very strict standards on organic food and other types of organic products. To be considered organic, something has to be free of artificial additives, growth hormones, antibiotics, and other impurities. In other states, however, you can say anything is organic if you want to. A lot of the time, organic standards are industry controlled on a voluntary basis. In practice, that means that the consumer has very little protection. Finding non-GMO food products can be very difficult if you don’t live in California.

In reality, the best way to make sure that you are using organic products is to buy locally grown produce. If you can buy food, clothing, crafts, skin care products, and other consumer items that are made in your area, it is quite easy to verify whether or not they are organically prepared. Although these organic products can cost a little bit more, you can feel good about yourself for using them. Not only do you know that you are living a healthier life, but you also will be supporting local industry. It is always nice to be a will to give something back to your community, and by making wise decisions about the food we eat and the clothing we wear, we can do just that.

Postmen wearing kilts?

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

The kilt is something which many Scots and people of Scottish decent feel very strongly about.

It is not just a fashion symbol but an important part of our Scottish heritage. Ask almost anyone anywhere in the world what one symbol they think of when the word Scotland or Scottish is mentioned to them and they will respond either Tartan or the kilt.

Although most Scots do not not wear the kilt as part of their day to day clothing it is almost compulsory on special occasions such as weddings and other formal occasions. Here in Aberdeen where I live hundreds of students have been graduating from the two local universities and almost every male graduate has chosen to wear the kilt for the formal photos. Some of them may have not have been Scots by birth and their only real connection with Scotland has been through attending university in Aberdeen Scotland but they still wore the kilt.

The USA and Canada were amongst the first countries in the world to create a special tartan day to commemorate how important Scots have been in developing their country. Curiously the Scottish Parliament have yet to declare any special tartan day although there has been discussions about it for some years. However this may change in the near future as Scots recently elected a new government from the Scottish Nationalist Party which is perhaps more focused on preserving the Scottish Culture than our other parties. However this is not going to be an advert for this political party.

Despite the non recognition of Tartan Day by national government many of our towns and cities have agreed a day when they would celebrate the event. Each town or city will hold their own parades with kilted bagpipers marching down the main streets. A wonderful sight to behold (although not every one tends to appreciate the music of the traditional bagpipes).

Anyway back to the title about Postmen wearing kilts.

I have just heard today about a postman (are we allowed to use that term or should it be Postal Service Delivery Person?) who has been just launched a campaign to be allowed to wear a kilt when delivering mail as part of his official uniform. No, the postal service worker is not in Scotland but based in Lacey, Washington USA. Dean Peterson has sent around 1,000 letters to Postal Service union branches in every US State with photos of himself wearing a prototype official uniform kilt.

I have not seen the photos myself or know of any Scottish connection he may have as a reason for wearing the kilt but it seems to me to be a good opportunity for Scots across the USA to make a stand and support Dean in his campaign. Lets face it if Scots made the USA so special that President Woodrow Wilson stated

“Every line of strength in American history is a line colored with Scottish blood”.

who can stop Scots wearing their national costume at work.

Write to your local postal service managers and the union branches and tell them you would be proud to see people of Scots descent able to wear the kilt. Then come to our main website on ScottishJerk.com and make a comment to let us know what you have done.

Lets get the kilt being worn by Scots everywhere.

Roswell: UFO or not UFO !?

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

Bruce believes, but cannot directly prove, that at least two of the Roswell era stories concerning bodies being found in the desert next to crashed space craft can be explained by advanced test devices which came down onto the desert floor with advanced forms of anthropomorphic test dummies aboard. During his research he found evidence of the widespread development and use of instrumented human dummies, as well as the use of monkeys and chimpanzees in such research. Bruce replied that he had not heard it. June Cain explain that yes there were Germans at the camp captured prisoners of war they were never address as aliens in fact that term was never used then.

UFO is an abbreviation for unidentified flying object, which is an object in the air that cannot be easily explained. Over the years, many people say they have seen UFOs.

UFOlogists had long argued that, following a flying saucer crash in New Mexico in 1947, the government not only recovered debris from the crashed saucer but also four or five alien bodies. According to some UFOlogists, the government clamped tight security around the project and has refused to divulge its investigation results and research ever since.

Project Bluebook and the crash at Roswell had yet to become pop culture icons and the Majestic 12 was a strip show in Las Vegas. People rarely spoke about UFO except to discuss the most recent science fiction film they had seen at the local theatre. Project Bluebook was a ploy to discredit the UFO craze sweeping the nation at the time. The military desparately wanted to research these supposed tech’s. Project Bluebook was closed and the sponsor of the project, the Air Force was happy because it no longer had to deal publicly with the UFO problem.
